The Cleveland Indians send Fausto Carmona to the minors

The Cleveland Indians have sent Fausto Carmona to the Arizona Rookie League. Carmona pitched in 12 games (all starts) for the Indians this year and he was 2-6 with a 7.42 ERA and a 1.81 WHIP. It’s starting to appear that Carmona’s 2007 season was a fluke. He has 19-8 with a 3.06 ERA in 32 starts in 2007. But, in 2008 and 2009 so far, Carmona has started 34 games in which he is 10-13 with a 6.10 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. If Carmona doesn’t start throwing strikes soon his career could go the way of Daniel Cabrera and what a waste that would be.

The Cleveland Indians place Asdrubal Cabrera on the D.L.

The Indians have placed starting 2B Asdrubal Cabrera on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left shoulder. Cabrera has played in 53 games this season for the Tribe and he is 65 for 206 (.316 avg, .801 OPS) with 38 runs scored, 2 homers, 27 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. The Indians will probably replace Cabrera with a platoon of Jamey Carroll and Luis Valbuena. Carroll has played in 15 games for the Indians this season and he is 14 for 46 (.304 avg, .888 OPS) with 7 runs scored and 4 RBIs. Valbuena has played in 17 games for the Indians this season and he is 12 for 59 (.203 avg, .588 OPS) with 10 runs scored and 1 RBI. The Indians have plans for Valbuena in their future so look for him to get a long look while Cabrera is out of action. The Indians have recalled 2B Josh Barfield from AAA to replace Cabrera on the active roster. He has played in 6 games for the Tribe this season and he is 3 for 4 (.750 avg) with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. The Indians will miss Cabrera’s all-around game while he is out of action.
